The run-up to Christmas is arguably the busiest period of the year for most retailers, both in the UK and in other areas around the world. Christmas retail campaigns have become a huge part of the festive season, with the timing of stock and services promotion being crucial. While there will always be those that think that the Christmas advertising, promotions, and sales begin too early, there is sufficient evidence to show that many people start their Christmas shopping before the “traditional shopping season” – providing an argument for early on-set preparations. So, when do most people actually start their Christmas shopping?
A look at the figures
Understandably, December is considered the festive month, with most preparations for the big day taking place in the few weeks before. However, statistics show that the vast majority of people have already started buying products and gifts before the December has even begun.
This infographic by Yesmail Interactive shows that 38.1% of shoppers in 2015 started their Christmas shopping before November! In fact, over two-thirds (69.8%) of people reported starting their shopping before 1st December. This suggests that the vast majority of shoppers are getting in the mood for festive spending over 3 months before Christmas.
Further figures, presented by Statista, showed that in 2017, over half of shoppers started buying gifts in October or November, compared with just 24% of people who reported beginning their shopping in December.
Why is it important to know this?
If you work in the retail sector, it is likely that the festive period is a significant time for your business. It is important to keep track of consumer habits during this period in order to maximise the effects of sales strategies and make for a successful and profitable Christmas.
How can my business make the most out of the Christmas period?
Christmas Market Shopping and Sales
Christmas markets have become a huge event category across the UK and the rest of the world, with a 2014 review by the Centre for Retail Research showing that over 414.2 million shoppers spend a massive £3.59 billion at Christmas markets in Europe alone.
So, if you’re looking for another way to get the word out about your retail business and goods/services into a ready-to-buy audience, then getting involved with a local Christmas market can be an effective step.
